The local currency unit is the Armenian Dram (AMD). Notes are issued in denominations of 1000AMD, 5000AMD, 10.000AMD, 20.000AMD, 50.000AMD and 100.000AMD. Currency can be changed at banks, hotels or money-changers. There are no restrictions on currencies brought into or taken out of Armenia.

Transportation

Yerevan is a user-friendly city in terms of getting around. Taxi cabs, buses, minibuses and trolleybuses all function to help get locals and tourists from place to place throughout the capital. Generally costing 100 AMD (less than 20 cents US), the within-city minivans ("Marshrutni" or "Marshrutka" as known in the local parlance) are a convenient mode of transportation, especially given the fact that there are over 100 different routes. The numbered minivans drive along designated routes (major stops indicated on a placard on the windshield) stopping to pick up passengers who flag down the vehicle along the way.

Climate

Armenia’s climate is very different. The country is located in the subtropical zone, among ridges of the central part of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. But despite this the subtropical climate is observed only in the southern part of Armenia (Megri region). It is an area of such subtropical plants as oranges, lemons, olives and other plants. In other regions of Armenia the climate is markedly continental. Summer is dry and sunny, lasting from June to mid-September. Winter is short and quite cold with plenty of snow. In the mountains the average summer temperature ranges between +10 and +22°C, and in the winter temperatures range between +2 and -14 °C. In plain lands the average January temperature is -5 °C, and July temperature is +25 °C.

Electricity

Armenia operates with 220 volt electricity. The hotel has electrical adaptors and transformers for those guests bringing 110 volt electrical appliances.

Tipping

Most hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge. Additional tipping is voluntary. You may add 5%–10% more to the bill in restaurants and bars or tip to service staff if the service is exceptional.
